GT America connects two centuries of typographic genres, combining 19th century American Gothic and 20th century European Grotesk styles. The result is one cohesive typeface family unified under the best design features from both traditions. Originally released in 2016, this update implements the typographic system in variable font format as well as five new scripts. Exclusively available at Grilli Type.

We collaborated with our partners from around the world to expand the typeface to five new scripts—Arabic عربي, Devanagari देवनागरी, Hebrew עברית, Korean 한글, and Thai ภาษาไทย—to enable GT America’s role as a global typeface. These collaborators brought their design expertise and fluency while applying GT America’s personality to Grilli Type’s most comprehensive script extension yet.
GT America Intl synthesizes the Gothic model’s strong character with the functional purity that Grotesks have to offer. Noël Leu developed the typeface over a ten year span, using a Swiss Style-lens to refine the design details. We and our partners then expanded the supported writing systems in the eight years since its original release.
The American Gothic model closely follows the logic of the calligraphic pen stroke. This is particularly visible in the double-story g that uses bold sweeping curves for both the ear on top and the curved descender portion of the letter. This same calligraphic gesture is also visible in the other scripts.
Inktraps are subtle in the lighter weights and become more accentuated the bolder the weight. This offsets dark spots and improves color and texture for body copy text.
GT America is designed with a focus on reading comfort at body copy sizes. It opts for a comparatively high stroke contrast in bolder weights to keep counters open and legible.
Design Features
Thinned stems and angled spurs are applied and follow the calligraphic stroke movement. They add personality and unique details while also improving legibility by enlarging the outer counters. Uppercase characters are condensed, taking up less width for a more economic function focused on text usage.
Economic Typesetting
Lowercase m and w are kept at a narrow width to allow for economical typesetting by fitting more characters on each line.
Alternate g
All styles contain an alternate g for a more Swiss Style look.

As original and sound as GT America Intl is in its concept and structure, most of all it’s a useful tool. Consider this your Swiss Army Knife of typographic systems, with a passport to everywhere.
